NorthStar’s Comprehensive Approach to Addiction Therapy

Substance use disorder (SUD) affects the body, mind, and spirit. Additionally, co-occurring mental health conditions can complicate addiction and treatment alike. A well-rounded, individualized therapy plan is essential for achieving lasting recovery. We utilize a variety of therapy methods to address all aspects of addiction.

Evidence-Based Methods

Our clients participate in a range of psychotherapy (talk therapy), including:

  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) – Recognizing thoughts and actions that lead to substance use so the cycle can be broken
  • Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) – Developing skills to cope with intense emotions and manage triggers
  • Motivational interviewing (MI) – Exploring personal values and goals to promote motivation for change

We also host psychoeducational sessions to provide information on addiction and mental health, as well as teach relapse prevention skills.

Holistic and Experiential Therapies

Recovery requires a focus on the whole person, not just the addiction. That’s why we also integrate holistic and experiential methods such as:

  • Breathwork and meditation – Encourages mindfulness and relaxation
  • Art therapy – Provides a creative outlet for self-expression
  • Sand tray therapy – Uses symbolic objects to explore emotions and experiences physically

By engaging in talk and experiential therapies, clients at NorthStar learn to manage stress and emotions without turning to substances.

Our Addiction Therapy Programs

Recovering from SUD requires a lot of self-work, but addiction does not occur in a vacuum. Experiencing therapy in a range of settings promotes well-rounded healing. Our programs include:

Individual Therapy

Clients connect with an addiction therapist for individual sessions related to their behaviors, triggers, and underlying issues. Our skilled professionals help clients build deeper levels of emotional awareness in a safe environment. We welcome clients to process their thoughts and emotions to build resiliency for the path ahead.

Group Therapy

Living with substance use disorder can feel lonely and disconnected. Our group therapy program helps our clients understand that they are not alone in their challenges. Supportive talk therapy sessions offer a sense of community, along with the opportunity to discuss shared experiences and gain insights from others. We host 12-step meetings and other peer support groups as well.

Family Therapy

Addiction can strain relationships with loved ones. Our family therapy program helps clients and their families begin healing together. We provide family sessions and a family day. Family day allows loved ones to participate in workshops and therapeutic discussions. Sand tray therapy is featured during family day, allowing loved ones to uncover buried dynamics that are often at the core of pain and trauma. During family day, support members younger than 10 participate in separate play therapy, not primary workshops.
